Another Year, Another Yoller

Welcome (belatedly) to a new school year!

It's November Break, and we're in the thick of some of the most stressful work of the year.  New initiatives, new programming, new colleagues, new challenges, new students, and more.

The overarching threads of this year though? Pretty good.

  • Connections with colleagues that go beyond curriculum.  We share books, text memes, and give each other crap for being out sick or on PD/Personal Days.  This is a first for me, since I typically guard my personal self from Work People.
  • HS Circulation numbers are up, WAY up, even from the years before me.  Partially because of one avid 9th grade reader, but across the board anyway.
  • 9th grade volunteer!  Looks a lot like mentorship, and I am absolutely good with that.  Kid is excited about books, learning systems, and seeing whether Librarianship is her eventual career.
  • Seniors visiting the library.  While we lost the homeschool kid from last year (music department shake-ups caused him to shift districts for Jazz Band), my library acquired a Senior Capstone student who self-identifies as a Weirdo.  Welcome, kid, you're in the right place.
  • No Study Hall in the Library, kids are required to have passes, and they're finally figuring out that I can't be fooled.  No fake passes, no old passes from the office two periods ago, etc.  Some are still pushing boundaries, but it's better than last year.
  • Lots of curricular connections with colleagues, from Native American Heritage Month to upper elementary research, and more.
There are some frustrating bits remaining, mostly from the admin end of things, and a few colleagues who can't be bothered to pull their heads out of...the sand.  Overall though? It's been a good year so far.

Some things to continue looking forward to:
  • Elementary Lunch Buddy groups
  • Mid Day Tech Club
  • Maybe D&D club for kids.  After school.
